Garage Door Repair
Having your garage door break is the kind of problem you’re rarely prepared to handle. Unless you are like us, you just don’t spend a whole lot of time thinking about broken garage doors.
Luckily, we are here for that.We have garage door repairs on the brain, and are just waiting for your invitation to visit you at your Columbus, OH home.
Before you give us a call, however, you should know that many of the little repairs we often make can be avoided with just a little bit of maintenance care on the part of the homeowner. (Even a few of the repairs themselves can be completed by someone with a little bit of DIY willingness!) If you’re dealing with something small, like a squeaky or sticking door, try these quick solutions.
Disclaimer: Most of these repairs are pretty straightforward, but there are risks. We strongly advise you to take all of the necessary safety precautions and encourage working with a partner. Do NOT attempt any repairs if you feel uncomfortable. Call us immediately if you have any questions. We can answer them over the phone or come directly to any property in the Columbus, OH region.
Tighten the fasteners
Using a short ladder, you should be able to reach the screws, nuts, and bolts that secure your track to the ceiling of your garage. Loose fasteners can present obstacles to the rolling wheels or impact the levelness of the track itself.
If you give this a try, we recommend using a spotter at the base of the ladder to provide an extra pair of hands and to keep you safe.
Sometimes, after being bumped (or for no apparent reason at all), the sensitivity settings on your garage door opener may find themselves in need of adjustment. When this happens, increasing and/or decreasing the sensitivity can reveal a “sweet spot” that makes things work smoother.
Give it the old eyeball test
A large number of our customers in the Columbus, OH area are surprised to learn that their garage doors have stopped working for a single, simple reason: blockage. Garage doors cannot open and close properly if their mechanisms are cluttered with debris.
Have you checked for debris in the tracks, on the chain, or in front of any sensors? If you find some, remove it. Usually that is enough to fix your problem.
Wheels, chains, and track all must be lubricated in order for the garage opener to work at full effectiveness. When they begin to dry out, opening or closing the door can create loud, unpleasant sounds, or even stop the movement altogether.
Defend your garage against cold Columbus winters
Wintertime in Columbus, Ohio brings frigid temperatures that can affect the mechanisms that keep your garage door operating as you expect. If you think cold weather may have been at least partially to blame for your garage door’s malfunctions, then a space heater may answer all your problems.
The not-so-dirty secret
The above tips are not only DIY solutions to common garage door repair problems, but also a basic maintenance checklist. On top of that, they’re also the first things we’re going to check when we come out to repair your garage door.
